Obtaining WordNet 1.6

WordNet is available for anonymous FTP from ftp.cogsci.princeton.edu. A mirror site in Europe is maintained by the University of Stuttgart in Germany at ftp.ims.uni-stuttgart.de (with many thanks to Edgar Hoch and Oliver Christ). Note that the mirror site may lag a bit when new packages are released.

Before You Download

Those unfamiliar with WordNet should read "Five Papers on WordNet" which is available in PostScript and Acrobat (PDF) formats, or as a compressed tar file containing the nroff source.

Downloading WordNet Packages

Download the appropriate database package for your system:
- Database Package - Includes WordNet 1.6 database, interfaces, sense index, gloss index, interface and library source code, and documentation. This package requires 37MB of disk space.
  - Unix Database Package (13.6MB to download)
  - PC Database Package (14.5MB to download)
  - Power Macintosh Database Package (12.4MB to download)
  The Unix and PC packages can also be downloaded in 512K chunks from the FTP site (wn16.unix.tar.gz.*, wn16pcm.*).
- Prolog Database Package - Includes WordNet 1.6 database in a Prolog-readable format and documentation (5.3MB to download, 18.6MB installed). This package can also be downloaded in 512K chunks from the FTP site (prolog16.tar.gz.*).
Download Optional Packages:
- Semantic Concordance Package - Includes concordances of semantically tagged Brown Corpus files linked to WordNet 1.6 senses and documentation. This packages requires 43MB of disk space. You must also have the WordNet database package installed to use the semantic concordance files.
  - Unix Semantic Concordance Package (5.6MB to download)
  - PC Semantic Concordance Package (5.6MB to download)
  - Macintosh Semantic Concordance Package (5.9MB to download)
- Sense Map Package - Includes mapping of 1.5 noun senses to their corresponding 1.6 senses and documentation (1.8MB to download, 6.7MB installed).
- Tcl 7.6 and Tk 4.2 are needed if you want to compile the WordNet interface or library.
