Obtaining WordNet 1.7.1

WordNet is available for anonymous FTP from ftp.cogsci.princeton.edu. A mirror site in Europe is maintained by the University of Stuttgart in Germany at ftp.ims.uni-stuttgart.de (with many thanks to Edgar Hoch and Oliver Christ). Note that the mirror site may lag a bit when new packages are released.

Before You Download

Those unfamiliar with WordNet should read "Five Papers on WordNet" which is available in PostScript and Acrobat (PDF) formats, or as a compressed tar file containing the nroff source.

View the various README and other informational files:

  • README file for a description of the available platforms, required files associated with each, and additional information about the WordNet 1.7.1 release:
  • CHANGES for a summary of changes to WordNet since version 1.6.

Downloading WordNet Packages

  1. Download the appropriate database package for your system:

    • Database Package - Includes WordNet 1.7.1 database, interfaces, sense index, interface and library source code, and documentation.

    • Prolog Database Package - Includes WordNet 1.7.1 database in a Prolog-readable format and documentation (6MB to download, 21MB installed).

    • 1.6 to 1.7.1 Sense Mapping Package - A set of files to map 1.6 noun and verb sense keys to 1.7.1 sense keys. Neither the 1.6 nor 1.7.1 database is included in this package.

  2. Read the unpackaging instructions and install the package.

  3. You can browse the FTP directory for other miscellaneous files.

  4. Please send e-mail to wordnet@princeton.edu indicating the package and computer platforms that you are using. This helps us maintain statistics about our user base so that we can continue developing WordNet to best suit your needs.
